This spring break, I thought it might be nice to relax and just enjoy being pregnant…. YEAH RIGHT! We are building a house and moving and having a baby all in less than 8 weeks. I need to get everything ready for the move and make sure everything for Zoey's room is ready for her.
My first project was to FINISH her bedding. I searched for days and weeks after we found out we were having a girl for bedding that I liked. Everything I found was special order, hand made, and very expensive. I knew I didn't want to spen a lot, but I didn't want to settle…. So my sewing machine came out!
My mother in law and I went to the fabric store after running a few other errands and found some fabric I liked, and we got started.
I made the bumper pads using most of the directions on the pre cut "Nu Foam Bumper Pads" found at JoAnn's fabrics. The instructions say to cut the front and back of the "pillow" but I cut one big piece and sewed it on three sides. Adding the ribbon for ties sucked the most, mainly because I didn't look at the directions correctly and sewed them wrong at least 4 times before I did it right.
Here you can see, I put the ribbon on the out side, which ended up being sewn inside the pillow part, You want to put them inside the fold so they end up being on the outside when your done sewing the seams.
When those were done I started on the bed skirt. I looked at about 3-4 blogs and instructions and came up with my own way to make what I wanted.
FIrst you have to decide between a 14 inch skirt or a 20 inch skirt. The 20 inch will go all the way to floor when the crib is at its highest setting, then when you lower it, after the baby grows, you only need a 14 inch skirt. I decided on a 20 inch and I will bring it up to 14 when that time comes.
I picked out four fabrics I liked, and cut them the following sizes:
Front of skirt: 104 inch long strips. ((You double the length of the length you need to get the ruffled effect.)
Sides of skirt: 56 inch long strips.
The top layer is 12 inches wide
second layer is 7 inches wide
third layer is 4 inches wide
fourth layer is 5 inches wide.
I gave myself an inch for seams (1/2 on each side)
Then I sewed all four pieces together. Next you want to cut your deck. You can use an old sheet, scrap or left over fabric, or plain white fabric. It goes under the matress so noone will ever see it. I had some white fabric, so I used that. You wan to cut it the size of you crib mattress, standard is 28 X 52.
Then finally you pin and sew the pannels to the deck! There are several tutorials on how to ruffle easier, but I knew how to pin it and wasn't ready to try something new.
Here it is pinned to the deck.
Finally, here is the finished product! I can't wait to get it in her room and on her crib.
I will use a purple and white chevron fitted crib sheet and purple blankets to finish it off!
Here are some other things I have for her room that I have made:
Accent pillow with a deer.
I found this blanket box at an auction and refinished it. My chevron skills need improvement.
I also got this at the furniture auction. I will put it next to the glider.
I painted these arrows for some wall art.
Stay tuned… more to come! I'm still looking for a dresser to double as a changing table and curtains for the three windows in her room.
